Just 5 kilometres from Caravaca and 45 kilometres from Murcia
lies the town of Cehegin, with a population of 14,000. Cehegin is a
place of natural beauty, surrounded by mountains and forest areas
and is amassed with history. Its churches, palaces, monuments, are
many and the town is well worth a visit.
The town dates back to Roman times and was occupied by the
Visigoths and the Moors. Evidence of the first settlement goes back
to 2400 BC. Today, Cehegin is a vast hilltop monument to its Arabic
and medieval past.
The town's famous mediaeval quarter (a Historical
and Artistic Heritage ) owes its layout to the Arab settlements and
has many stately homes, churches, convents, palaces and public
buildings.
The fifteenth century Church of la Concepción and the sixteenth
century church of La Magdalena are in the oldest part of the town,
whilst the Church and Convent of San Estaban and Shrine of La Virgen
de las Maravillas is on the outskirts.
Other places of interest to
visit are the Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological site of Begastri and the Caves of Peña Rubia with their pre-historic
paintings.
And don't forget to visit the Town Hall, which was
originally the eighteenth century Palace of Los Fajardo.
