The small town of Calasparra in rural Spain, with a population of 9,000, is located in the Sierra del Molina region, 45 kilometres from Murcia. The town has a large market every Friday. There are regular musical events in the municipal theatre, and during the summer there is live music outdoors. The largest annual fiesta lasts for five days in September, when the town is on holiday.

The area is known throughout the world for its good quality
variety of organically grown rice which can be found cultivated on
the banks of the River Segura.
The lush green terrain with its
beautiful parks, mountains and rivers is very appealing and
today is attracting more and more visitors.

It has several interesting archaeological sites, whose artefacts can be found
in the Archaeological Museum.
And hewn out of the rocks on the beautiful
banks of the river Segura you will find a very tranquil grotto that is the shrine
to the patron Saint of Calasparra - Virgen de la Esperanza (Our Lady
of Hope). Also known as the Santuario de la Esperanza, the shrine is
popular with Spaniards from all over the country.
Activities such as canoeing, rafting and pot holing are popular.
Nearby caves worth visiting are The Cave of El Puerto, a unique pot
holding cave and the Cave of Monigotes which has an underground lake
and prehistoric cave paintings.
